Porcellionides Pruinosus Powder Blue Isopod Care Guide

The Porcellionides Pruinosus, known as the powder blue isopod is an ideal classic choice for every home. This is a new collection of bioactive worms which you will love to breed and have around you. This isopod has a slick metallic blue hue with a very fast movement.

They are little worms that work tirelessly to clean and recycle themselves. The Powder blue isopod stays in great habitat, feeds averagely, and behaves in an ideal manner. This is a rare isopod species that you can use efficiently in a bioactive vivarium.

Before breeding the Porcellionides Pruinosus, it’s important to know how they behave and how you can take proper care of them. Also, feeding them with natural matter and meals rich in proteins will go a long way. The powder blue isopod can serve as quality meals for pet reptiles such as snakes, toads, lizards, and turtles

Size, Appearance, and Behaviour

The Powder blue isopods are a little smallish species which are rare specimens of isopods. You can find them small to medium-sized around, however, they tend to grow quickly when fed well. This Isopod species will usually grow around 1 cm, however, they are very active. Just try to pop them inside and watch as they will move.

The Porcellionides pruinosus have a rough texture around their carapace, this colour ranges from pale silver to a  dim chrome colour. These are really lovely creatures and aren’t just for show. These Powder blue isopods are very active breeders and feeders, that’s why they are an ideal choice for bioactive activities and a perfect isopod species.

These isopods can easily be handled in most terrarium conditions without any problems, therefore you can pick them for your next project. Also, these little critters use their energy well. They breed quickly and tend to have big broods, therefore expect to have a big population quickly.

However, you will need to be careful with them because they are delicate creatures. These soft-bodied isopod specimens need careful handling and interacting with them can be an issue, nevertheless, they have excellent metallic tones.

Care Guide

Powder blue isopods can be kept in several ways which ensure they are in good condition. They can be in their container or a big bioactive vivarium or terrarium. Sometimes, if you have the budget or space, you can put them in both habitats. If you buy medium-sized isopods, you don’t need a big container for their culture.

However irrespective of where they are kept, they multiply rapidly so be ready for upscaling or divide them into small proportions. Ideally, I will suggest you start with a shoe box size habitat to study their growth.

Whichever habitat you use, ensure they get enough ventilation and air except if you are running them in a  special isopod enclosure. When inside this enclosure, you can puncture some holes yourself.

Moreover, some enclosure you can use is a big flat acrylic invertebrate with some magnetic locking, this will create a good habit for the powder blue isopod. When you are making holes in their habit, ensure you make them small because it creates a better airflow than bigger holes. If you get a terrarium and vivarium, they usually come with small holes or venting systems.

  • Substrate

When keeping the Powder Blue Isopods, it’s necessary to have a perfect bioactive substrate. This substrate must be able to accommodate enough Isopods and retain moisture because the isopod habitat can’t be allowed to be dry. Also, this substrate requires a good component for them to feed on.

When using an isolated device, mix coco coir, moss, sphagnum materials and earthworm castings. Moreover, for a planted terrarium, it’s better if you use a variation of the classic ABG mix. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens is a great choice for a bioactive substrate. Sometimes it is advised to swap some materials for better renewable ones.

Also, place some layers of leaf litter above the substrate. You could also try to mix oak leaf litter which is an ideal way to offer natural due and great environmental materials easily.

  • Feeding

The feeding habits of Powder blue isopods vary according to their bioactive setup. Naturally, they feed on decay organic elements sometimes called detritus. This matter is expected to form their core nutrition, however, there are many options to eat. These isopod species feed on foods rich in protein and vitamins which helps them increase in size. They can feed on anything which includes fruit or vegetable cutting.

Moreover, you can feed them with anything that comes out of your kitchens, although it is nice to go in smaller bits. Vegetables are better than fruits due to the pests and insects found in fruits. When in an isolated culture, you should feed them many times weekly. But if they are placed in a dedicated vivarium, feed them less.

For better strength and immune system, meals rich in protein are advised. When searching for a healthy meal, you can choose pellets, meat scraps and fish pellets. You can use a special food blend which can keep your isopods fed, fresh and healthy.

  • Temperature and Humidity

If you care about your Powder blue isopods, you will need them to thrive in an ideal temperature and good humidity level. It doesn’t have to be fancy and the recommended humidity of these isopod species is between 75-85 Fahrenheit. If you are running a cold home, you should pop your place with warm materials. For ideal humidity with a container, you should keep moisture levels up as this would generate enough humidity ideal for your powder blue isopods.

Are the powder blue isopods good feeders?

While not all isopod species are great feeders, the powder blue isopods are excellent feeders. However, ensure you feed them with enough ingredients to allow them to breed properly. Pets and reptiles love this species of isopods because they are a great diet due to their richness in protein. The key is ensuring they leave in a nice habit, feed properly, and are well cared for.
