A praying mantis is one of the easiest invertebrates to keep and one of the shortest-lived, and almost everything that goes wrong with one comes down to two things: enclosure height and molting.
Quick answer
- Lifespan is short. Most species live roughly six months to a year as adults after reaching maturity.
- Housing is single occupancy. Mantids are cannibalistic and will eat each other, including a mate.
- The enclosure must be at least three times the mantis’s body length in height, because it molts hanging upside down.
- Feeding is live prey only. A mantis will not take dead food.
- They are not venomous or poisonous to people. The grip of the raptorial forelegs is the only thing you will feel.
Height is the whole enclosure question
This is the single most common fatal mistake, and it is entirely preventable. A mantis molts by hanging from the roof of its enclosure and pulling itself free of the old exoskeleton with gravity. If the distance between its grip point and the floor is less than about three times its body length, it cannot fully extend, and it either fails to shed cleanly or falls before the new exoskeleton hardens. A deformed leg from a bad molt does not repair until the next molt, and after the final molt it never repairs at all.
Practical version: tall over wide, every time. A mesh or textured lid it can actually grip, and no water dish or hard object directly under the hanging spot.
| Requirement | What it actually means |
|---|---|
| Enclosure height | 3x body length minimum, measured from lid to floor |
| Grip surface | Mesh, screen or rough branch on the ceiling. Bare smooth plastic is a fall risk |
| Housing | One mantis per enclosure. No exceptions worth taking |
| Humidity | Species dependent, but a light misting cycle with a real dry-back, not a permanently wet box |
| Food | Live insects roughly one third to one half the mantis’s body length |
| Handling | Tolerated by most species, but they are fragile and it offers them nothing |
Feeding, and why they refuse food
A mantis hunts by sight and ambush, so movement is the trigger. Fruit flies for tiny nymphs, then houseflies, blue bottles, small roaches and crickets as it grows. Two or three appropriately sized items every couple of days suits most species.
A mantis that suddenly stops eating is usually about to molt, not sick. In the days before a shed it will hang still, ignore prey and darken slightly. Remove uneaten live prey during that window — crickets will chew on a soft, freshly molted mantis. Full detail on prey sizing is in what does a praying mantis eat.
Cannibalism is not a myth, and it is not only mating
Sexual cannibalism gets all the attention, but the everyday version matters more to a keeper: two nymphs in one container will produce one nymph. They do not recognise siblings, and a hungry mantis treats anything mantis-sized and moving as food. Ootheca hatches produce dozens of nymphs that must be separated almost immediately.
Choosing a species
Beginner-friendly species are the larger, hardier, less humidity-sensitive ones. The showpiece species — orchid mantids in particular — are more demanding on humidity and molting conditions and are a poor first animal. Ghost mantids sit in between and are one of the more forgiving of the ornate species. We compare the commonly kept ones in praying mantis species.
Are they dangerous?
No. A praying mantis has no venom and no toxin. A large adult can grip hard enough to be startling and the femoral spines can break skin, but that is the extent of it. We go through the misconceptions in are praying mantises poisonous.
What you actually need to buy
A mantis setup is genuinely cheap compared with most of what we sell. A tall ventilated enclosure, something to climb and hang from, a spray bottle and a live feeder source covers it. The climbing furniture is the part worth doing properly, and cork bark and branch material do the job better than plastic — our terrarium supplies are the same hardscape we use for our own invertebrates.
If you are moving on from a mantis to something longer-lived, the natural next step is a detritivore rather than another predator. Millipedes want the same tall-ish humid box with a completely different feeding regime, and millipede care covers it. Everything we ship, whatever it is, ships under our live arrival guarantee.
Common questions
How long does a pet praying mantis live?
Most commonly kept species live roughly six months to a year after their final molt, with females generally outliving males. Total life from hatching is usually under eighteen months.
Can I keep two praying mantises together?
No. They are cannibalistic at every life stage and will eat each other regardless of sex, size or how well fed they are. One enclosure, one mantis.
Why has my mantis stopped eating?
It is almost always an approaching molt. The mantis will hang motionless and refuse prey for a few days beforehand. Remove live feeders during that period so they cannot damage it while it is soft.
How big does the enclosure need to be?
Height matters more than floor space. At least three times the mantis’s body length from the lid to the floor, with a surface on the ceiling it can grip.
Do praying mantises bite or sting?
They have no sting and no venom. A large mantis can grip with its forelegs and the spines can scratch, but there is no medical concern.
