Phelsuma guimbeaui is endemic to Mauritius, where it depends on native hardwood forest that has been heavily reduced. It is a larger, more robust day gecko than the commonly kept species, with heavy rust-orange spotting over bright green and blue tones on the head.

It is a canopy species and behaves like one — it wants height, vertical cork and stable humidity rather than floor space.

Care

  • Enclosure: tall and planted, with vertical bamboo or cork for basking and territory
  • Humidity: misted daily with a drying cycle; good ventilation is essential
  • Lighting: UVB is strongly recommended for any diurnal Phelsuma
  • Food: insects plus a quality gecko diet; they feed readily on nectar substitutes

Care questions

What humidity do these geckos need?
Most tropical species need a humidity cycle rather than constant saturation — misting to raise humidity, then allowing partial drying, with good ventilation throughout. Persistent stagnant damp causes far more health problems than brief dry periods.
Do these geckos need UVB?
Low-level UVB benefits most diurnal species and is increasingly recommended even for crepuscular ones. It is not a substitute for correctly supplemented food, and the fixture must be replaced on the manufacturer schedule regardless of whether it still emits visible light.
