Ants and mites — and that answer is the reason a wild poison dart frog is dangerous and a captive-bred one is not. Dart frogs do not manufacture their toxins. They steal them from what they eat: alkaloid-bearing leaf-litter arthropods, mainly ants and oribatid mites. Take those out of the diet and the poison goes with them.

The wild diet, and what it does

Dart frogs forage the rainforest floor by day, taking enormous numbers of very small arthropods. Ants dominate — formicine and myrmicine species especially — alongside oribatid mites, springtails and small beetles.

Those prey items are not just food. Early researchers assumed the frogs synthesised their own toxins. Captive colonies settled the question: fed on fruit flies, the frogs lost their toxicity. Oribatid mites turn out to be a major source, accounting for a large share of the known alkaloid structural classes; myrmicine ants supply several more; beetles and millipedes contribute others.

Because they hunt by sight and by movement, dead or motionless food is largely ignored. That is why fruit flies work so well: they are the right size, they move constantly, and they cannot escape a well-sealed enclosure.

How much, and how often

More often than most new keepers expect, in smaller amounts. Juveniles eat daily; adults every one to two days. A meal is a modest dusting of flies — enough that the frog hunts actively for a while, not so much that uneaten flies accumulate and stress the animal.

Weight is the honest signal. A dart frog in good condition is rounded but not swollen, with visible activity through the day. A thin, hidden, inactive frog is usually a temperature or humidity problem rather than a feeding one, so check the enclosure before increasing food.

And what eats them?

In the wild, remarkably little — that is the entire point of the colouration. Bright aposematic patterning advertises the chemical defence, and predators learn to leave them alone. A handful of specialised predators have evolved resistance, but for most of the rainforest a conspicuous dart frog is simply not worth the risk.
