Centipede Enclosure Setup

A centipede enclosure is a containment problem first and a habitat second. Get the seal and the substrate depth right and almost everything else is forgiving; get them wrong and you have either an escaped venomous animal or one that fails a moult.

Quick answer

  • Floor space over height. A centipede is a burrowing animal, not a climber.
  • 4–6 inches of substrate minimum for an adult, more for the large Scolopendra. It burrows, and it moults underground.
  • The lid must latch and the seal must have no gap. A centipede flattens and pushes.
  • Ventilation on the sides rather than a full mesh top, so humidity holds without the substrate going stagnant.
  • One animal per enclosure. Always.
  • Everything is done with long forceps. Build the enclosure so you never need your hands inside it.

Escape-proofing, because this is the part that matters

A large centipede is a flexible, muscular animal with a flattened body and legs that grip on almost anything. It will find a gap you would not consider a gap. Three specific failures account for most escapes:

The lid seal

A lid that sits in place is not a lid that latches. Use a container with a positive locking mechanism, and check the seal along its whole length rather than at the corners. Anything a credit card would slide into is a route out.

Cable and cord entries

Heat cable notches, thermostat probe holes and ventilation grommets are the classic escape points because they are cut slightly oversize. Seal around them.

The substrate line

Deep substrate is correct husbandry, but it also raises the animal’s starting height. Leave a clear vertical gap of several inches between the surface of the substrate and the lid so the centipede cannot simply reach it.

Smooth-sided plastic or glass is your friend here. Avoid full mesh tops entirely — a centipede can grip mesh, and it also lets humidity out faster than you can put it back.

Humidity is a cycle, not a number

The commonest husbandry failure after escape is a dry enclosure. A centipede moults its entire exoskeleton, and it does that below the surface where the moisture is. If the substrate dries out, the moult fails, and a failed moult is usually fatal or leaves permanent deformity.

Pour water into one corner rather than misting the surface, so the deep layer stays damp and the top can dry back. If you can squeeze the substrate from the middle of the enclosure and it holds together without dripping, you are in the right region.

Feeding without opening a gap

Appropriately sized roaches or crickets every five to ten days for an adult, more often for juveniles. Drop the prey with long forceps and close the lid before the animal reaches it. Remove anything uneaten within a day — crickets will chew on a soft, freshly moulted centipede, which is one of the few ways a healthy animal dies in captivity.

A centipede that stops feeding, seals itself in and stays underground is almost always pre-moult, not sick. Leave it alone, keep the substrate damp, and do not dig it out.

What to put in it

The hardscape is not decoration here. Rotten hardwood and cork give the animal cover and hold moisture, and leaf litter on the surface slows evaporation while giving small feeder insects somewhere to live rather than harassing your centipede. Common questions

How big should a centipede enclosure be?

Roughly two to three times the animal’s length in floor width, with enough depth for 4–6 inches of substrate. Floor space matters far more than height, and an oversized enclosure is harder to keep humid, so bigger is not automatically better.

Can centipedes climb glass?

Not smooth vertical glass or plastic reliably, but they climb silicone seams, mesh, cork and cables easily. Treat any textured vertical surface as a ladder and keep it away from the lid.

Do centipedes need heat and UVB?

No UVB. Most commonly kept species do well at normal room temperature. If your room runs cold, use a low-wattage mat on a side wall, never underneath, and never let the substrate dry out as a result.

How deep should the substrate be?

At least 4 inches for a medium species and 6 or more for a large adult Scolopendra. It needs to burrow and to moult underground, and shallow substrate is one of the most common causes of a failed moult.

Can I keep two centipedes together?

No. They are solitary and cannibalistic, and two in one enclosure reliably becomes one. If you buy a multi-animal tier from us, it is two or three separate set-ups, not one shared box.
