Velvet Worm Care: Eoperipatus totoro

Eoperipatus totoro is a velvet worm from southern Vietnam, formally described in 2013, and it is still the only velvet worm ever described from that country. It is also not an insect, not a worm, and not quite an arthropod — which is most of the reason keepers want one.

What it actually is

Velvet worms sit outside the arthropods as their own phylum. Where an insect has hard jointed limbs, an onychophoran has soft lobopods that work by hydrostatic pressure — the same principle as a caterpillar’s prolegs, but on a body plan that has been recognisably itself for a very long time. In the Peripatidae, males carry 23 pairs of legs and females 24.

They are ambush predators. Rather than chasing, they approach slowly and then discharge two jets of proteinaceous slime that set almost instantly, pinning small prey in place. The animal then bites through the cuticle, injects saliva, and feeds. It is one of the few genuinely alien-looking behaviours you can watch happen on a kitchen table.

Why this species specifically

The first specimens were collected in Cát Tiên National Park in Vietnam from late 2007 onward. A Vietnamese team published the first record of onychophorans in the country in 2010, and the formal description followed in 2013 in Zoologischer Anzeiger, led by Ivo de Sena Oliveira, using both scanning electron microscopy and molecular data.

The name is not a taxonomist’s joke at the animal’s expense. The collectors asked for it: watching the animal move reminded them of the many-legged Catbus from Miyazaki’s My Neighbour Totoro, and the describing team honoured the request.

Before that description, Southeast Asian Eoperipatus had been so heavily lumped together that at one point every described species in the genus was folded into a single name. The 2013 work argued the opposite — that the region holds far more onychophoran diversity than anyone had catalogued. The single most useful mental model: this animal is a piece of the forest floor that happens to be alive. It has no waterproofing, it never voluntarily leaves cover, and in the wild it comes to the surface mainly in the wet season. Build a permanently humid litter layer and leave it alone, and they are far less demanding than their reputation suggests. Let the enclosure dry out once and you will not get a second chance.
